SPRING/SUMMER 2001 CANADIAN DESIGNER COLLECTIONS

KAMKYL
: Spring/Summer 2001

Douglas Mandel for Kamkyl launched his first menswear collection following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather in the ways of the tailor. Mandel's journey, which has included stops in Los Angeles, Iceland, for Hugo Boss in Germany, Milan, etc. has had a strong impact on this collection contrasting "inner-city urban speed with the nomadic wanderer within us." Some of the fabrics utilized in the sportswear such as Lycra, poly-coated blends, and active stretch are light and breathable, which you wouldn't guess at first glance. Furthermore, Mandel uses more traditional fabrics such as wool, nylon, and linen for free flowing and beautifully cut two button jackets and drawstring pants.

Shirts and jackets featured military style shoulders; zippered elbow pads, clever back pockets, and ruffled romantic detailing. The Kobenhaven shirt in a gauze/hemp material and earthy tone included subtle clasps on the left shoulder, a unique touch but still low-key. The clothes are produced in Italy and the design studio is based in Montreal. In fact, immediately following the presentation, Mandel packed the collection up, hopped in the car, and left for home to participate in preliminary plans for a fashion show during next year's Grand Prix Formula One race. The journey continues!
