David
Spencer
spring/summer 2004
David Spencer added a touch of leather sizzle to Toronto
Fashion Week with his spring 2004 collection. The tribal look is explored
in vivid detail, beginning with rust-coloured leather breastplates in
raw cuts. Similar cuts are used in leather skirts so that they slink
out of control, and braided leather straps hold everything together.
The designer's wayward white dresses share a bit of
the spotlight too. Slightly elliptical seams are used to construct fluid,
white cotton skirts. The simplicity of the halter-top is an illusion-a
myriad of strapping runs across the back in piecemeal but structurally
sound lines.
David Spencer knows that every cut can be done a little
differently, that every outfit can be made a little more dynamic. This
is a good thing, as long as he doesn't decimate every pencil skirt he
gets his hands on.
