Andy Thê-Anh - fall/winter 2008

Andy Thê-Anh makes the patchwork gown his own by infusing it with the rigourous symmetry that has been the backbone of so many of his collections, including fall/winter 2008.
The high-waist skirt echoes the 40s (as in so many other fall/winter 2008 collections), while the symmetrical French-cut blouse it is paired with may even push the look decades earlier.
Andy, as he is affectionately known, bucks the current by using spring colours to liven up autumn dreariness. Andy fans are going to have to scrap the ‘no white after Labour Day’ rule if they are to get into one of his cozy white knit dresses, shoulder shrugs, or sharp-edged futuristic jackets. Peacock blue is another staple, used for a sweeping monochrome gown, as well as a silk top with organza sleeve draping.
Belts, in all shapes and lengths, are the accessories that unite this collection. Andy uses them intelligently to accentuate, not overshadow, the shapes that he has toiled so hard to create. A pencil-thin brown leather belt bisects the dusty rose trench quite high on the waist, while for the turquoise chiffon dress, a wide black number with silver buckle does quite nicely. Thankfully, the pieces that don’t need belts—the spate of flawless silk evening gowns—don’t have them.
