Annie Thompson - spring/summer 2003

Annie Thompson’s spring-summer 2003 collection is tweaked with attitude, as an array of lightweight dimpled, metallic and otherwise supped-up fabrics will attest to.

The first thing that strikes you about an Annie Thompson outfit is the amount of attention placed on the silhouette. The top and jacket frequently jockey for length, and sometimes each requires pure dominance to make the statement, such as the ventilated smock with utility pockets.

Thompson sculpts capri pants of the perfect length and some nifty cinched skirts, while gratuitous pin-tucking results in some simple but eclectic black skirts.A significant amount of asymmetry can be found, and it is used with a unique twist in the purple ribbed viscose top. There is an inescapable military element, and it goes much further than the styling influences of the heavy boots that traipsed down the spring/summer 2003 runway. The khaki button-up suit jacket and skirt has a remarkable texture to it, one that works harmoniously with the combat rigidity of both the collar and fitted sleeves. Because the collection successfully exploits the full spectrum of solid colours, the weakest pieces are those with the diffused marble pattern.

The collection is comprehensive and laden with sex appeal. Annie Thompson confirms a hands-on design philosophy that we suspected all along.

“The blend of looks that you saw today is what makes it my own. If you think it doesn’t match, try it on.”
