Eve Gravel - spring/summer 2005

Contrast maybe the new buzzword on the lips of the Montreal glamourati, and Eve Gravel gives us some clues as to why this is, in her spring 2005 collection.

Banana yellow and virtually every shade of green wrestle in Gravel’s spring palette, something she uses masterfully to create a sunny and seductive picture for what is evidently her favourite season. She makes use of another growing Canadian trend-layers of skin-tight cotton and silk chiffon in neutral tones, a sultry kind of urban costuming that works well in piece after piece, particularly in the striped suits that sport a curious black arrow used extensively in the collection.

Gravel cuts fabric some slack the rest of the time, with dimpled shrugs and bell skirts. The off-the-shoulder blouses have as many voluminous, gathering folds as the more obsequious cowl-neck versions. The fact that these tops are paired with sheer cut-off tights proves that the Eve Gravel wearer can have her cake and eat it too.
